Elie refers to night a lot in the novel. He believed that God was represented by light but as he loses his faith he finds it hard to see any light. He remembers a lot of things happening at night. This symbolized his loss of faith in God and his religion. In this picture there is only a person and there is nothing else visible. This represents Elie's world without any type of higher power in it. He feels like the prisoners are the only people who exist anymore. To him there is no God, there is only him.

In the novel fire symbolizes the cruelty of the Germans. Elie believed that God punished the evil by fire but in the camps the innocent are being punished by fire. It turns Elie's world up-side-down and he doesn't know what he should believe anymore or even if he should believe in anything. The picture above shows a crematorium during the Holocaust. It would have been impossible for me to keep from going crazy if I knew that people were being burned. To have to smell that smoke every day would be impossible for me.

In the novel "Night" the only thing that kept Elie alive throuh the Holocaust was his love for his father and the only thing that kept his father alive was his love for Elie. If they would not have had each other then they wouldn't have survived for very long. They gave each other something to live for and that's what kept them alive. The other father-son relationships that are in the novel end up being about surviving and not love. Elie and his father made it farther than the other fathers and sons because of their love for each other. The picture shows a father holding his son. It also shows the great care that the father puts into looking out for him by cradleling the son in his arms and hands. When the son grows up he will have a lot of respect and love for his father. This is how Elie and his father are.

While Eliezer is in the camp he sees how cruel people can be towards each other. First it starts with the Nazis being cruel to the prisoners then the prisoners start to turn on each other. Elie doesn't understand how people can be so cruel to each other but after a while of not eating and fearing death/torture he realizes how he too could end up being cruel to people just so he can stay alive. The picture shows an example of inhumanity during the Holocaust. It's unbelievable how terrible people can be to other humans. The people in the picture are just skeletons. It's amazing that they are even alive. I don't know how anyone can be that malnourished and still be able to move. It's sad to know that people can actually treat other people this way.

I found this picture when I was looking for images of inhumanity. It reminded me of Juliek and it might actually be, so I thought I would share it with you.

I just want to say something about inhumanity. The human race has committed so many atrocities towards each other that it would almost make more sense to say that it is humane to murder, steal, rape, et cetera. Inhumanity would imply that the things being done are out of the ordinary for humans but anymore death and poverty is so common that it would be very unlike the human race to help other humans out or at least be kind to one another. So, it would make more sense if inhumanity meant that we were being nice to each other. I'm mostly just rambling because studying the Holocaust makes me angry with people who can kill other people and not lose any sleep over it. I'll get back to the assaignment now.

In "Night" Elie has a hard time accepting God's silence. He can't keep his faith when he believes that God is all knowing and all seeing but isn't doing anything about the horrors of the Holocaust. The silence also represents the silence of the prisoners. No one did a lot to speak up or to rebel against what was happening. The monkeys speak no evil, see no evil, and hear no evil. They think that if they ignore the evil in the world then it will go away but this isn't the case. If the evil is ignored then it will just have a chance to grow and become more powerful. Elie said in an interview with Oprah that just because he went through the Holocaust it doesn't make him care less about the evil in the world it just makes him want to do more to stop it. He would be completely opposite of the monkeys.

At the beginning of "Night" Eliezer has a very strong faith in God. He even goes out of his way to find a teacher to help him study his faith. As the story goes on though, he begins to question why and how the other Jews are still keeping their faith with everything that is going on. The picture shows a Jewish rabbi studying. If Elie didn't have to go throught the Holocaust he may have ended up being a rabbi because he did at one point have very strong religion. He even would cry when he prayed. So, this picture could have been a picture of Elie's future but his belief in a benevolent God was wiped out by the atrocities that the Nazis committed. (Picture from: www.aloha.net)

'Sup everyone? My name is Jessica. I'm a senior in high school right now. I plan to go to college for biomedical engineering. I don't think I can tell you where though just in case some creeper tries to track me down. I'm not that worried about it but I signed a paper that said I couldn't give any personal information away. I don't know if saying what college I'm going to is personal but I don't want to find out by having my blog deleted. Anyway, I have a dog named Spike. We were told that he is a beagle-cocker spaniel mix but I think that he's actually a cocker spaniel-coon dog mix. My favorite band is Chiodos. Umm... I don't like macaroni and cheese or hot dogs especially not when they're mixed. I like to draw and paint. My favorite person is Leonardo da Vinci. I like musicals. My favorite musical is either "Sweeney Todd" or "Phantom of the Opera." And last but not least my favorite color is green. So, that's a little bit about me. I hope you weren't too bored reading it.

Hello everyone,
I'm back! I'm not in speech this time though. This time around I'm in novels. Right now we're reading "Night." It's pretty good. A little depressing, but good. Well I'm going to go help other people get their blogs set up. Until the next time I get around to posting something. Toodles!
