In the novel "Night" the only thing that kept Elie alive throuh the Holocaust was his love for his father and the only thing that kept his father alive was his love for Elie. If they would not have had each other then they wouldn't have survived for very long. They gave each other something to live for and that's what kept them alive. The other father-son relationships that are in the novel end up being about surviving and not love. Elie and his father made it farther than the other fathers and sons because of their love for each other. The picture shows a father holding his son. It also shows the great care that the father puts into looking out for him by cradleling the son in his arms and hands. When the son grows up he will have a lot of respect and love for his father. This is how Elie and his father are.
