At the beginning of "Night" Eliezer has a very strong faith in God. He even goes out of his way to find a teacher to help him study his faith. As the story goes on though, he begins to question why and how the other Jews are still keeping their faith with everything that is going on. The picture shows a Jewish rabbi studying. If Elie didn't have to go throught the Holocaust he may have ended up being a rabbi because he did at one point have very strong religion. He even would cry when he prayed. So, this picture could have been a picture of Elie's future but his belief in a benevolent God was wiped out by the atrocities that the Nazis committed.
